Hello, JCA Interages Volunteers,
The Montgomery County Public Schools have REDUCED the requirements for becoming a volunteer. New JCA Interages volunteers now no longer have to upload a photo of the CDC COVID Vaccination card to the https://classroom.mcpsmd.org/ site. Volunteers no longer have to attest to receiving the COVID vaccination shots or boosters. This will relieve some of the burdens of applying to volunteer as the technology involved was a challenge for some.
Volunteers must still be fingerprinted by MCPS and must watch the MCPS Recognizing and Reporting Child Abuse Webinar. The Webinar is valid for three academic years.

Seeking students aged 13 to18 years old
to engage with older
adults with memory loss.
Meet with older adults from JCA Kensington Clubs (KC), a daytime engagement program for adults with early stages of memory loss, for activities such as games, discussions, and crafts. Students will have two opportunities (days) to work with KC members. They can sign up for one or both of the following sessions. SSL hours are available.

JCA FOOD DRIVE!!! JULY
Help fight food insecurity this summer! JCA is collecting for the food drive July 24 -28 at the JCA building 12320 Parklawn Avenue, Rockville MD 20852 from 10 - 4 each day. Saturday, July 29th from 12 - 2, youth will be assisting those donating at Interfaith Works located at 751 Twinbrook Parkway Rockville, MD 20851.

Career Day at Wheaton Woods Elementary School
JCA Interages Program Coordinator, Olga Pulgar-Vidal brings a wealth of knowledge because she is also a Pediatric Dentist with a long and distinguished career. She presented at the Wheaton Woods Elementary School Career Day. She spoke to three separate groups of Pre-K, K and 2nd grade students and she was dressed as a dentist. She presented in a mask with gloves and showcased dental instruments. Her presentation included educational videos such as "A Visit to the Dentist" and a "Song to Brush the Teeth". The children were very participative! Olga said, "I confirm once again why I decided to become a Pediatric Dentist!"

Intergenerational Collaboration in Reader's Theater: Nurturing Literacy and Preparing for Middle School
Our Glen Haven Elementary School and Harmony Hills Elementary School Readers Theater programs exemplify the transformative power of intergenerational collaboration. By uniting young performers from the 3rd and 5th grades with passionate volunteers aged 50+, these initiatives nurtured improved reading comprehension, motivation, and fluency. Through interpreting scripts and embodying characters, the 3rd and 5th-grade students gained valuable life skills while developing a lifelong passion for literature and the performing arts.
The interplay of different generations fostered a sense of belonging and community, preparing the young 5th-grade performers for the challenges of middle school. With enhanced literacy and a love for storytelling, these students are empowered to embrace new adventures, ensuring a smooth transition and continued success in their educational journey.

"Thank you" Breakfast
Gaithersburg Elementary School recently hosted a heartfelt thank you breakfast for our amazing Grandreader volunteers and dedicated JCA staff. Their unwavering commitment to the program has made a significant difference in the lives of second graders. The Grandreader program, which pairs volunteers with young readers for the academic year, has created lasting bonds and fostered a love for reading. We are thrilled by the success we have witnessed so far and eagerly anticipate the continuation of this remarkable program.

MONTHLY READING TUTOR TRAINING SERIES
We hope you will join us on Zoom for our monthly Reading Tutor Training series. We are so grateful to presenter Megan Bainbridge, Reading Specialist of the Captain James E. Daly Elementary School, who is providing the sessions. Each session focuses on a different Reading Tutor Training topic, and lasts about an hour. Pre-registration online is required.
Please note, these sessions are providing broad tips and are not intended to be certification level training.
